The elements of this big wave storm created beauty and phenomena in every direction. The fierce winds that collided with the massive surf at Pe'ahi blew showers of mist into the air. The setting sun illuminated these squalls into iridescent rainbows. From above, the colors and patterns appeared fractal.

In the most isolated lands on Earth— surrounded by thousands of miles of the Pacific Ocean—the chances of life happening in Hawaiʻi seemed impossible. Yet these volcanic mountains became the wettest places in the world, with abundant flows of fresh water and thriving vegetation. Honokōhau Valley is home to the tallest waterfall on Maui and one of the greatest views I’ve been fortunate to photograph thanks to modern aviation.
