At Peʻahi, also known as Jaws, rogue waves collide with a unique underwater landscape that creates some of the biggest barrels in the world. From a private boat, I watched this marvelous surf break awaken in the early morning light as pulses of the Pacific surged into Maui’s north shore.

In the most isolated lands on Earth— surrounded by thousands of miles of the Pacific Ocean—the chances of life happening in Hawaiʻi seemed impossible. Yet these volcanic mountains became the wettest places in the world, with abundant flows of fresh water and thriving vegetation. Honokōhau Valley is home to the tallest waterfall on Maui and one of the greatest views I’ve been fortunate to photograph thanks to modern aviation.

A spectacular summer morning on the Nā Pali Coast of Kauaʻi. I chartered a private, open-air helicopter to document this extraordinary landscape illuminated by the first light. This photograph is dedicated to Nakota Kai Crumbo - Rest In Peace. After envisioning this photograph for a few years, all the right weather conditions finally aligned with the phase and timing of the rising moonlight, unfortunately on the day of Nakota’s passing. This 20-minute long exposure photograph reveals a high resolution glimpse into the dawning of Halloween at Haleakalā Crater. The star trail movement conveys the rotation of the Earth during the capture.

NĀ PALI COAST, KAUAʻI

I photographed this image at Miloli’i Beach on Kaua’i after kayaking the Nā Pali Coast for over 12 miles. I had never witnessed more stars in the sky than I did on this night, and I wanted to capture them in a way that represented the timelessness of this place. A 16 minute exposure reveals the rotation of the Earth from this incredible coastline.
