A beautiful sunrise on a pristine Maui beach. According to Hawaiian legend, Kōkī Beach is where the volcano goddess Pele fought her final battle with her older sister, Namakaokaha’i, the goddess of the ocean. Pele’s bones were stacked along the Kōkī shoreline and her spirit traveled to Kilauea of Big Island.

During a beautiful Maui sunrise, a double rainbow formed behind this volcanic black sand beach. I was fortunate to quickly capture a five-image panorama to reveal the entire scene of this fleeting moment.

KAUAʻI, HAWAIʻI
Over five million years of tectonic shifts, volcanic eruptions, wind and water erosion, and vegetative growth patterns have endowed the ancient topological wonders of Hawaiʻi with a mysterious and almost ineffable beauty. Photographed from a private helicopter, this unique panoramic image reveals the entire Nā Pali Coast during a stunning, clear evening on the island of Kauaʻi.

The lands of the Na Pali Coast are ancient topographical wonders. After kayaking and camping along the entire coast for three days, it was incredible to see this place from the air. It almost seems like a different World. There is a love you feel here that transcends time and space.

Niu, or coconut, is often viewed as the Polynesian “Tree of Life.” One of the most versatile and prolific plants found throughout Hawai'i, niu provides a sustainable source of food, water, and medicine, as well as hard wood and fibers for numerous material purposes. This resource has helped shape island culture for centuries and continues to sustain many island communities.

NĀ PALI COAST, KAUAʻI
I photographed this image at Miloli’i Beach on Kaua’i after kayaking the Nā Pali Coast for over 12 miles. I had never witnessed more stars in the sky than I did on this night, and I wanted to capture them in a way that represented the timelessness of this place. A 16 minute exposure reveals the rotation of the Earth from this incredible coastline.

KAUAʻI, HAWAIʻI
A close friend brought me to a special beach on the north shore of Kauaʻi many years ago. From my first visit there, I knew I wanted to see this place from the air. I almost couldn’t believe how beautiful this scene was once I witnessed the valley behind the beach, illuminated by the setting sun. The lush valleys of Kauaʻi truly feel like the old Hawaiʻi. Undiverted rivers flow from the mountains to the ocean, feeding the loʻi (taro patches) that carry the legacy of Hawaiian culture. These environments symbolize the importance of keeping places like this wild.

A spectacular summer morning on the Nā Pali Coast of Kauaʻi. I chartered a private, open-air helicopter to document this extraordinary landscape illuminated by the first light. The boats moving across the water not only gave these magnificent sea cliffs a great sense of scale, but also a great sense of adventure.

As the Hawaiian Islands age, they slowly drift and sink back into the ocean. We can see this topographical wonder on a map of the island chain. From Hawai’i Island to Kaua’i, the landmass becomes smaller and smaller. One may contemplate the idea that these mountains are like giants walking across the ocean.
