In the Hawaiian islands, wai (water) is our most precious resource. The Hawaiian word for wealth (waiwai) alludes not only to the physical presence of water, but also to the fertility, abundance, and prosperity it provides.

I photographed this piece from a private helicopter after a week of remote camping and native forest restoration work with the Maui Forest Bird Project. This lone tree emerging from the mist felt like a calling for our stewardship of the land. I like to be optimistic and imagine that one day a prolific forest will exist here again on the leeward slopes of Haleakalā, filled with the songs of our Hawaiian birds who called this place home.

A spectacular summer morning on the Nā Pali Coast of Kauaʻi. I chartered a private, open-air helicopter to document this extraordinary landscape illuminated by the first light. KAUAʻI, HAWAIʻI
A close friend brought me to a special beach on the north shore of Kauaʻi many years ago. From my first visit there, I knew I wanted to see this place from the air. I almost couldn’t believe how beautiful this scene was once I witnessed the valley behind the beach, illuminated by the setting sun. The lush valleys of Kauaʻi truly feel like the old Hawaiʻi. Undiverted rivers flow from the mountains to the ocean, feeding the loʻi (taro patches) that carry the legacy of Hawaiian culture. These environments symbolize the importance of keeping places like this wild.

After months of research, geographic study, and waiting for the weather to clear at the summits of Mauna Kahālāwai, the elements put on an extraordinary show of light and atmosphere. In the most isolated lands on Earth— surrounded by thousands of miles of the Pacific Ocean—the chances of life happening in Hawaiʻi seemed impossible. Yet these volcanic mountains became the wettest places in the world, with abundant flows of fresh water and thriving vegetation. Honokōhau Valley is home to the tallest waterfall on Maui and one of the greatest views I’ve been fortunate to photograph thanks to modern aviation.

Niu, or coconut, is often viewed as the Polynesian “Tree of Life.” One of the most versatile and prolific plants found throughout Hawai'i, niu provides a sustainable source of food, water, and medicine, as well as hard wood and fibers for numerous material purposes. This resource has helped shape island culture for centuries and continues to sustain many island communities.

Wahi pana are celebrated and storied places in the cultural traditions of Hawai‘i. They may be heiau, royal birthing sites, legendary sites, and places of significance for the people who live there. These sacred places, such as Waiʻānapanapa pictured here, have mana or supernatural power and are treated with great respect, honor, and reverence. They are filled with Hawaiian history and spirit.

Flying through sheets of rain during this doors-off helicopter flight, I noticed most of Kauaʻi stood under the shadows of dense clouds. While passing along the Nā Pali Coast, I watched the morning sunshine break through a hole in the sky, casting a marvelous light onto these stunning sea cliffs. My favorite moments of being a landscape artist occur through mindful observation and discovery. Only then do I feel captivated to draw my camera.

As the Hawaiian Islands age, they slowly drift and sink back into the ocean. We can see this topographical wonder on a map of the island chain. From Hawai’i Island to Kaua’i, the landmass becomes smaller and smaller. One may contemplate the idea that these mountains are like giants walking across the ocean.
