Wahi pana are celebrated and storied places in the cultural traditions of Hawai‘i. They may be heiau, royal birthing sites, legendary sites, and places of significance for the people who live there. These sacred places, such as Waiʻānapanapa pictured here, have mana or supernatural power and are treated with great respect, honor, and reverence. They are filled with Hawaiian history and spirit.

HALEAKALĀ NATIONAL PARK
The banyan tree is considered to be a symbol of longevity and/or immortality. It grows aerial roots from its branches that form additional trunks and anchor the tree to the ground. I believe this is a tree that represents the intelligence of nature, and the web of life that connects all living things. Its presence is both therapeutic and healing to the human eye.

A marvelous private property I was fortunate to stay at on the lush, mountainous slopes above Hana, Maui. After arriving here in the dark of night, I was amazed to wake up at sunrise and witness the land blossoming with tropical flowers.

Every spring, we’re blessed with beautiful purple flowers blooming from the jacaranda tree as. their vibrant colors burst across the gentle slopes of upcountry Maui. I discovered this row of trees in full bloom, illuminated by the setting sun. The clouds drifted in above to complete the scene. The moment felt like a pastel painting.

The Hawaiian 'Ōhi’a is the most culturally and ecologically significant tree in the islands’ native forests. Since 2014, scientists and conservation experts have been battling the onset of Rapid 'Ōhi’a Death, a new fungal pathogen that can quickly kill trees once they’re infected. I created this piece of the 'Ōhi’s Lehua flower, emerging from the dark to help spread awareness and save this species.
