I photographed this piece from a private helicopter after a week of remote camping and native forest restoration work with the Maui Forest Bird Project. This lone tree emerging from the mist felt like a calling for our stewardship of the land. I like to be optimistic and imagine that one day a prolific forest will exist here again on the leeward slopes of Haleakalā, filled with the songs of our Hawaiian birds who called this place home.

While passing along the Nā Pali Coast, I watched the morning sunshine break through a hole in the sky, casting a marvelous light onto these stunning sea cliffs. My favorite moments of being a landscape artist occur through mindful observation and discovery. Only then do I feel captivated to draw my camera.

A close friend brought me to a special beach on the north shore of Kauaʻi many years ago. From my first visit there, I knew I wanted to see this place from the air. I almost couldn’t believe how beautiful this scene was once I witnessed the valley behind the beach, illuminated by the setting sun. The lush valleys of Kauaʻi truly feel like the old Hawaiʻi. Undiverted rivers flow from the mountains to the ocean, feeding the loʻi (taro patches) that carry the legacy of Hawaiian culture. These environments symbolize the importance of keeping places like this wild.
