Hawaiian weather patterns are often dictated by the makani or wind. Some of our clearest days occur when the winds are calm, revealing the towering summits of the majestic mountains and the vibrant colors and depths of the ocean. Soaring above the north shore of Kauaʻi, I marveled at the peaks of Makua and the vivid coral reefs of Hāʻena on this pristine morning.

After months of research, geographic study, and waiting for the weather to clear at the summits of Mauna Kahālāwai, the elements put on an extraordinary show of light and atmosphere. Documenting the breathing history and beauty of our ‘āina from this perspective was a dream come true, thanks to my local pilot and our shared passion for flying.

As the Hawaiian Islands age, they slowly drift and sink back into the ocean. We can see this topographical wonder on a map of the island chain. From Hawai’i Island to Kaua’i, the landmass becomes smaller and smaller. One may contemplate the idea that these mountains are like giants walking across the ocean.

KAUAʻI, HAWAIʻI
A close friend brought me to a special beach on the north shore of Kauaʻi many years ago. From my first visit there, I knew I wanted to see this place from the air. I almost couldn’t believe how beautiful this scene was once I witnessed the valley behind the beach, illuminated by the setting sun. The lush valleys of Kauaʻi truly feel like the old Hawaiʻi. Undiverted rivers flow from the mountains to the ocean, feeding the loʻi (taro patches) that carry the legacy of Hawaiian culture. These environments symbolize the importance of keeping places like this wild.

Flying through sheets of rain during this doors-off helicopter flight, I noticed most of Kauaʻi stood under the shadows of dense clouds. While passing along the Nā Pali Coast, I watched the morning sunshine break through a hole in the sky, casting a marvelous light onto these stunning sea cliffs. My favorite moments of being a landscape artist occur through mindful observation and discovery. Only then do I feel captivated to draw my camera.

The boats moving across the water not only gave these magnificent sea cliffs a great sense of scale, but also a great sense of adventure.
